DIAMOND GRADING REPORTS

DIAMOND GRADING REPORTS

Diamond grading reports, or diamond certificates as they are often called, are documents prepared by independent, certified gemmologists, working in properly equipped laboratories, which describe the specific characteristics of a diamond.

Typically, a diamond grading report gives a description of the diamond’s four Cs [link], including carat, clarity, colour and cut, as well as a plotted diagram of the stone and a description of its shape, including exact measurements, proportions and depth percentages.

It should also comment fluorescence and any imperfections in the diamond. A grading report does not include an appraisal of the value of the diamond. There are a large number of organisations and individuals offering grading reports and the consumer is advised to consider his or her choice carefully.

In particular, they should consider the reputation of the gemmological institution, whether stringent laboratory standards are being adhered to, and whether there is not contact between the buyer and the gemmologists examining the stone. Certain laboratories will only issue full grading reports for natural, untreated diamonds. If a diamond is treated or synthetic, this should be faithfully reported by the grading laboratory.
