MUSEUM EXHIBITIONS
A major aim of the AWDC is to spread knowledge about diamonds both within the industry and among the wider public. As part of its mission to promote Antwerp as the pre-eminent international diamond centre, the AWDC has over the years organised world-class exhibitions of diamond jewellery.
The first exhibition in the series took place in 1993, and it was one of the highlights during a festive year in which Antwerp was declared the “Cultural Capital of Europe.” Called “From the Treasury,” it featured a unique collection of historic and contemporary gems, as well as jewels belonging to royal houses. The jewellery was loaned by museums, exclusive jewellery houses, auction houses and private collectors. The royal houses themselves cooperated in the organisation of the event.
“From the Treasury” opened at the Province House of Antwerp in the presence of their royal highnesses, Prince Albert and Princess Paola, today King and Queen of the Belgians.
Following the spectacular success of the first exhibition, the AWDC decided to repeat this initiative on a regular basis. A second “From the Treasury” exhibition was held in 1997 and in 2002 an exhibition called “Living Diamonds” featured diamond jewellery inspired by natural themes.
While the first two exhibitions were hosted at the Provincial House, which is the seat of the government of the Province of Antwerp, since 2002 they have been housed in Antwerp’s Provincial Diamond Museum, which is located just a few hundred metres from the city's diamond district.
In 2008, after many months of preparations, an exhibition called 'Diamond Divas' was staged. The display featured a selection of stunning jewellery items worn by royalty, high society, and stars of stage and screen. Among others, these included Sofia Loren, Madonna, Marilyn Monroe and exclusive private jewellery of the late Princess Grace of Monaco.
