Antwerp Diamond Community Event - Purim

14 Mar 2014

‘Purim’ is a Jewish holiday that is celebrated on the 14th day of the Hebrew month of Adar. It commemorates how the Jewish people were saved from extinction in the ancient Persian Empire. It was Haman, royal courtier to King Ahasuerus, who planned to kill the Jews. Queen Esther, who was Jewish, heard about this plan from her uncle and foster-father Mordecai. With his help and thanks to the influence of Queen Esther, the plans of Haman were foiled.

The rescue of the Jewish community is celebrated on this holiday every year. Purim is characterized by public recitation of the Book of Esther and a festive dinner. ‘Haman’s ears’ are a traditional delicacy of Purim. These are triangular cookies filled with maw-seeds and other sweets. Traditionally people dress up in costumes and masks. This is why Purim often is called ‘Jewish carnival’.

Join AWDC in celebrating this event on March, 14th – 12 PM in front of the AWDC offices where you can enjoy typical kosher food
