The Congolese Mining Hero
Mining company Minico is located in the Democratic Republic of Congo, in the city of Tshikapa. Minico means “the mines of Congo” and our Diamonds and Antwerp ambassador Sese Bomboko has his roots there. Sese grew up between Congo and Belgium and studied politics at St. Louis University in Brussels.
He decided to start his own company in the wood manufacturing business in 2009. “The link between my studies and the company I started, was the fact that I was really touched by the ability to create economic growth, especially for a country that has the annual budget of a city,” Sese explains. Congo has abundant resources and potential, but at that time it lacked eager businessmen. Sese learned the right skills at university and this inspired him to start a company with his father. “My father owned a forest, and one day I asked him if we could use the forest to its full potential. By cutting trees, creating wooden floors and furniture and then placing wooden floors in companies, we created more employment,” explains Sese.
“In addition to the wood business, my father owned a mine in Congo and in 2013, he decided that it was time for me to run the mining company, so we decided on a new strategy to develop it,” Sese explains. The idea was to be involved in the entire supply chain in order to have access to the polished materials. However, the expertise needed to cut stones is obviously not the same as for wood, and the process of selling diamonds is also very complex. That is when the family Bomboko decided to seek a partner to work with and develop the business further.
Today, Sese owns 50% of Minico, a company known for their high quality diamonds, and works very closely together with trading partner Level Diamonds. “My father and I decided on a new business plan to develop Minico,” he says. Cutting trees is not like working in a mining company, so we decided to work as a team and sought a partner with the right expertise. Partnering with Level Diamonds was our next step.
“Sese is the company manager of Minico and the main activity of the business is extracting diamonds from the mine, whereas Level Diamonds focuses on all the activities that encompass trading, like cutting and negotiating the price,” Sese explains.
Sese splits his time between Antwerp and Congo. “I am passionate about the development of Congo but I feel Belgian, I studied here, all my friends are in Belgium and I am happy that my work allows me to collaborate closely with a Belgian company and to be able to travel between both countries.”
The mining company in Congo is about 25 square km in size. “I am passionate about managing people and the adventure to create. The development of Congo, a country with so much potential, is what I find important,” says Sese. The diamond industry offers many opportunities and the mining sector can have a big impact on this development. That is what drives me.”
De Congolese mijnheld
Sese Bomboko groeide op tussen België en Congo. “Ik studeerde en woon in België, maar wil de wereld veranderen in Congo. De natuurlijke rijkdom en het potentieel zijn gigantisch. Het is fantastisch om dat potentieel effectief te kunnen benutten en economische groei en werkgelegenheid te creëren,” aldus Sese.
Na zijn studies politieke wetenschappen in Brussel besloot Sese Bomboko om de gigantische bossen die zijn vader bezat in Congo te benutten. “Ik wou werkgelegenheid creëren en de Congolese economie een duwtje in de rug geven, dus besloot ik de bomen in het bos te kappen en er vloeren en meubels van te maken.”
De fabriek werd een succes en Seses vader vroeg hem in 2013 of hij niet hetzelfde kon doen met de diamantmijn die hij bezat. “Maar hout en diamant zijn twee totaal verschillende werelden,” aldus Sese. “Niet alleen het verwerkingsproces verloopt anders, ook de manier waarop hout en diamanten verkocht worden, gebeurt op een andere manier.”
En dus zocht Sese een partner met ervaring in de diamantsector en kwam zo uit bij Level Diamonds, een internationale groothandelaar gespecialiseerd in de handel in ruwe diamant. Waar Sese zich bezighoudt met het delven van de diamant, houdt zakenpartner Level Diamonds zich bezig met de verwerking en de verkoop van de diamanten.
“Nog meer dan hout is de ontginning en verwerking van diamant een proces dat effectief kan bijdragen aan de economische ontwikkeling van Congo,” aldus Sese. Dankzij de diamantproductie krijgen 5 miljoen mensen toegang tot medische hulp en meer kinderen kunnen onderwijs genieten. Daar mogen wij trots op zijn."
Congo is een land met een gigantisch potentieel, maar met een begroting van een gemiddelde stad. “Daar wil ik iets aan veranderen en dus wil ik ervoor zorgen dat de natuurlijke rijkdommen die het land heeft, effectief benut worden om het land vooruit te helpen. Door zelf actief te zijn in de diamantsector kan ik hieraan bijdragen.”
“Mijn band met België helpt me hier enorm bij”, aldus Sese. “Antwerpen is immers het beste handelscentrum in diamant ter wereld.” De 1700 diamantairs, de kennis en expertise die in Antwerpen aanwezig zijn, gebruiken Sese en Level Diamonds om hun diamanten te verhandelen tegen de beste prijzen. “Op die manier stroomt er meer geld terug naar de Congolese overheid, die belastingen heft op het aantal diamanten dat geëxporteerd wordt.” En zo kunnen België en Congo elkaar versterken en kan ik als Congolese Belg de twee landen waar ik van houd allebei een dienst bewijzen. Het is daarom dat ik met veel plezier ambassadeur ben geworden voor de Diamonds and Antwerp-campagne.
