On 6 July, the third stage of the Tour de France departed from Antwerp. In honor of this visit to Antwerp, the Antwerp diamond industry gifted a diamond trophy to the holder of the yellow jersey that day. Designed by Willy Henneuse, the silver “A”, set with 120 brilliant-cut diamonds, went to Swiss cyclist Fabian Cancellara, a big name in professional cycling.

Ludo Van Campenhout, Antwerp’s Alderman for Diamonds and Sports, and Marc Wauters, stage winner and yellow-jersey holder on the arrival of the Tour in Antwerp in 2001, presented the trophy at the start of the stage. Each year, the Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWDC) supports several sporting events in and around Antwerp in order to bring its various cultural communities closer together and to promote the diamond trade. Naturally, the diamond industry could not miss out on such a major event in the City of Antwerp.
