In Antwerp, British miner Gem Diamonds Ltd. sold a rough diamond from its Letseng mine in South Africa for $9 million.
The 164-carat precious stone is considered to be of exceptional quality with D colour and Type IIa purity. It is expected to produce top colour and clarity polished stones.
Gem sold the diamond in a profit-sharing arrangement — at $54,911 per carat — where it received the rough price up front and will also share in the sale price of the finished stones.
Gem Diamonds CEO, Clifford Elphick stated: "The recovery and sale of this high quality 164 carat white diamond reinforces Letšeng’s position as the premier source of exceptional diamonds."

The rough diamonds of Alrosa origin will be offered for sale in standard Alrosa assortments.
On June 25th, the AWDC will be organising an Information Day, exclusively for the Antwerp diamond industry.
On the Information Day, you can meet the AWDC staff and find out what AWDC can do for you and your company. During the event, AWDC’s departments and several partners will provide you with useful tools to support your business.
The event is organized exclusively for industry members and free of charge. Registration is not required.

On June 27th, AWDC Security Office, together with the Local Police of Antwerp, will launch an “Integrated Anti-Tigerkidnapping Program”, tailor-made for the Antwerp Diamond Area.
The primary objective of the “Integrated Anti-Tigerkidnapping Program” is to inform the diamond community on prevention measures and to provide guidelines in the event of tigerkidnapping.

The project will be part of the Business of Design Week 2013, Asia’s leading annual event on design, innovation and high-end brands in Hong Kong.

From June 21st to 28th AWDC will be hosting an exposition featuring the graduation works of the students of the Diamond & Gold department of the Stedelijk Lyceum Meir (SIHA) in addition to the works from students from various gold & diamond manufacturing schools in Europe.
“This is not a jewel" is a reference to one of the most famous paintings of the Belgian surrealist painter Magritte, depicting very realistic painting of a smoking pipe accompanied by the message "This is not a pipe". This project aims to create a framework for the sustainable flow of young talent by connecting partnering schools from all over Europe that offer similar educational programs. The works can be admired from Monday to Friday between 9AM and 5PM.
On May 31st, the village of Vorselaar inaugurated a diamond monument, celebrating the 100-year diamond heritage in the region. The creation of the special monument was realized with the support of the AWDC.
Vorselaar is one of the villages in the greater Antwerp area, “De Kempen”, a region that played an important role as the epicentre of Antwerp’s polishing activity and expertise in the twentieth century.
