Following the introduction of the new EU sanctions requirements on polished diamonds as of January 1st, 2026, the FPS Economy has announced that it has started carrying out random spot checks on import shipments of natural polished diamonds falling within the scope of the measures (0.5 carat and above) since May 4th, 2026.
These checks are intended to verify whether companies importing polished diamonds have taken sufficient and reasonable steps to ensure that the goods are not of Russian origin. As part of this process, importers must be able to present a correctly completed and signed Due Diligence Statement on Diamond Origin (DDS), supported by relevant documentary evidence demonstrating a risk-based verification process. The biggest update in comparison to our last communication on these spotchecks, is that the checks take place before the goods are imported, thus before the customs clearance.
For companies, being well prepared is essential. Incomplete documentation or late submission of requested information may result in shipments being blocked until all required documents have been provided to the authorities. Maintaining clear records, supplier correspondence and supporting origin documentation will therefore be increasingly important in day-to-day operations.
AWDC continues to support the industry in navigating these requirements and encourages all companies to review their internal procedures and documentation processes carefully.
