UPDATE
In February 2026 the US Supreme Court ruled that the President cannot use the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose broad tariffs on its foreign trade partners. As a consequence of this decision, the negotiated exemption for the imports of natural diamonds with EU origin under the IEEPA agreement between the US and the EU (also known as the 'Turnberry agreement"), ceased to have legal effect. Instead, after the Supreme Court's ruling, President Donald Trump imposed a temporary worldwide 10% import tariff for all trade partners (under the so-called Section 122).
However, the US administration is currently looking for new legal grounds to impose tariffs on imports from the EU that are in alignment with the political agreements made under the US-EU Trade Agreement. For AWDC, this include the previously granted zero tariff for the US import of natural diamonds with EU origin. Today AWDC is pursuing its lobby efforts with the European Commission and stakeholders across the Atlantic in order to get the US government to provide clarity on its commitment to honour this agreement.
