The annual “Embassy Open House Day” took place on Saturday 9 May 2015. The European Union organized this day in order to familiarize the American public with the different nations that make up the European Union. Curious visitors were able to learn more about Belgium, but also about the Antwerp World Diamond Centre and the unique role of the Belgian Diamond industry.
Canada is the third largest diamond producer in the world and one of the most important suppliers of rough diamonds to Antwerp. Last week, the Antwerp World Diamond Centre, spearheaded by governor Cathy Berx, travelled to Montreal, Toronto and Yellowknife. The meetings with mining company Stornoway provided strong indications the company is considering to commercialize its entire production from the Renard mine in Quebec through Antwerp.
As one of the fastest growing economies, strategically positioned between Europe and Asia, and supported by a strong government will to develop Turkey as a global trade hub for polished diamonds, the Turkish diamond market is clearly on the up. This week, a delegation of 16 Turkish jewelers, wholesalers and manufacturers paid a visit to Antwerp in the framework of the AWDC Antwerp Diamond Visitor Program and met with several Antwerp diamond companies.
To showcase the brilliant story of diamonds in Antwerp, the city launches a new guide map: ‘Antwerp loves diamonds’. The map provides an overview of historic and contemporary venues, as well as unique tips and useful information about purchasing diamond jewellery and the addresses of the jewellers that obtained the ‘Antwerp’s Most Brilliant’ quality label. The new guide allows everybody visiting the city to discover the magical world of diamonds in Antwerp at his or her own pace.
The Antwerp diamond industry is focusing on reinforcing its foothold on the Turkish diamond and jewelry market and has made this clear by means of a threefold initiative. In March we participated in the Istanbul Jewelry Show. AWDC is currently part of a Belgian trade mission to Istanbul and Baku where the AWDC, Borsa Istanbul and the Turkish Jewelry Exporters Association signed a Memorandum of Understanding, and from May 4 to 6, AWDC welcomes a delegation of Turkish diamond jewelers, jewelry wholesalers and manufacturers to Antwerp for a unique Visitor Program.
A delegation of representatives of the Antwerp World Diamond Centre and ten Antwerp diamond companies last week concluded a successful networking tour in Chicago and New York. Especially the Antwerp presence at the Smart Jewelry Show in Chicago succeeded in re-establishing Antwerp, the oldest and largest diamond trading center, as a reliable and competitive partner for the local market and enabled the Antwerp traders to reconnect with small and medium-sized, independent retailers.
Over 180 sports enthusiasts wore the colors of the Antwerp diamond sector during the annual Antwerp Ten Miles. We would like to congratulate all runners on their accomplishment and thank them for their participation.
