Ari Epstein
Making a difference
Ari Epstein has been leading the Antwerp diamond industry for the past 5 years. Confucius once said: “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” “And that is exactly how I feel about my job every single day”, Ari smiles.
“My father worked in the diamond industry, just like many others in the Jewish community”, Ari explains. “He was a diamond polisher and I truly admired the craftsmanship of his work. When my father used to come home from work he always spoke with such passion and pride with regards to diamonds and I think I inherited that admiration from an early age, and that still drives me in my job today.
When Diamond Office, the controlling organ that is in charge of processing the imports and exports of all diamonds in Antwerp, was looking for a new Director, Ari did not hesitate a second. “A match made in heaven! With my academic background I could pursue my passion in an industry that has always fascinated me”, says Ari. “The combination of glitter & glamour, the international character and all the different cultures working together within a square mile is unique.”
For 5 years now, Ari has been the CEO of the Antwerp World Diamond Centre, and our mission is to ensure that Antwerp remains at the forefront of the global diamond industry. “A day in the life of a CEO is never the same” he says, “I am responsible for the general development of the diamond industry, maintaining contacts with various political stakeholders, motivating and monitoring the local as well as international market as well as the international arena whilst trying to optimize existing procedures as well as guaranteeing the safety of the industry.”
Antwerp first
What Ari finds especially unique about ‘his’ industry, is the inherent connection that diamonds have with Antwerp. “I am an academic and am fascinated by the city archives filled to the brim with stories about the diamond industry. We have been connected to this city for over 550 years. Who else is able to say that?”
Ari is really looking forward to the Diamond Year that will be organized next fall by the city of Antwerp, where various events will take place related to the diamond industry. “We are as connected to the city of Antwerp, just like diamonds are connected to the earth,” says Ari. “Therefore it was about time that we celebrated this unique and strong connection with various festivities.”
During the Diamond Year the new diamond experience centre DiVA will open her doors, where diamonds will be showcased throughout ‘Winter in Antwerp’, a treasure hunt will be organized throughout the entire city and couples will be able to celebrate the eternal connection between love and diamonds with a extravagant Valentine themed cocktail. “In other words, our story has not been fully written yet. Every day our mission is to proudly reminisce on our 550 years of history whilst working hard and passionately to ensure our future.”
Het verschil maken
Ari Epstein staat sinds 5 jaar aan het hoofd van de Antwerpse diamantsector. “Confucius zei ooit: “Kies een job waar je van houdt, en je zal het gevoel hebben dat je nooit een dag moet werken in je leven.” Dat is het gevoel dat mijn job mij elke dag geeft,” lacht Ari.
“Mijn vader was net als een groot deel van de Joodse gemeenschap actief in de diamantsector,” steekt Ari van wal. “Hij werkte als diamantbewerker en ik bewonderde het artisanale karakter van zijn werk. Wanneer mijn vader ’s avonds van het werk kwam, sprak hij met veel passie en fierheid over het steentje. De liefde voor de sector is me dus met de paplepel ingegeven.”
Toen Diamond Office, het controle-orgaan waar elke zending diamant die Antwerpen binnenkomt of buitengaat fysiek gecontroleerd wordt, een nieuwe directeur zocht en Ari gepolst werd, twijfelde hij dan ook geen seconde. “A match made in heaven! Met mijn academische achtergrond kon ik mijn ding doen in een sector die mij altijd zo gefascineerd heeft,” aldus Ari. “De combinatie van de glitter & glamor, het internationale karakter en al die verschillende culturen die op 1 km2 samenwerken vind je nergens anders terug.”
Sinds 5 jaar is Ari CEO van het AWDC, de belangenorganisatie van de Antwerpse diamantsector. “Als CEO ziet elke dag er anders uit. Ik ben verantwoordelijk voor de algemene promotie van de sector, onderhoud contacten met de verschillende politieke niveaus, houd de vinger aan de pols in de wijk en op internationaal niveau, probeer bestaande procedures te optimaliseren en de veiligheid van de sector te garanderen.”
Antwerpen boven
Wat Ari vooral uniek vindt aan ‘zijn’ sector, is de onlosmakelijke band die de diamant heeft met Antwerpen. “Ik ben academicus en gefascineerd door de stadsarchieven vol verhalen over diamant. 550 jaar zijn wij verankerd in de stad. Wie kan dat zeggen?”
Ari kijkt dan ook ontzettend uit naar het diamantjaar, dat volgend najaar georganiseerd wordt door de stad en waar allerlei evenementen zullen worden georganiseerd in het teken van de sector. “We zijn even verworven met de stad, als dat diamant verworven is met de aarde,” aldus Ari. “Het was hoog tijd dat we deze unieke en sterke band eens feestelijk in de kijker zetten.”
Tijdens het diamantjaar zal het nieuwe diamantbelevingscentrum DiVA haar deuren openen, zal de ‘Winter in Antwerpen’ volledig in het teken staan van diamant, zal een schattenjacht doorheen de stad worden georganiseerd en zullen verliefde stellen tijdens een reusachtige Valentijncocktail de onlosmakelijke band tussen de liefde en diamant kunnen vieren. “Samengevat, ons verhaal is nog lang niet uitgeschreven. Elke dag opnieuw bestaat onze missie erin niet enkel met fierheid terug te blikken op onze 550 jarige geschiedenis, maar vooral met veel passie en ijver te werken aan de toekomst.”
