Al-Wali, a Lebanese heritage
When you walk around in the diamond district and pass through the Empire Shopping Center, it is impossible to walk by the known Al-Wali snack bar. This Lebanese snack bar has been a fixed piece of heritage in the Antwerp diamond district for no less than 12 years. At lunchtime you will see Jews, Indians and Belgians chatting together over a falafel. “I am pretty much part of the decor by now”, Fares smiles. “I know many people and probably many more know me.” Everyone who works in the diamond district has most certainly had a falafel or shawarma at Al-Wali.
Pitta & shawarma
Originally from Lebanon, the 46-year old Fares Saliba has been the owner of the snack bar for 12 years. “It is fantastic to work in the diamond district. With 1,700 traders working so close to each other, it seems like we are one big happy family”, says Fares.
His Belgian adventure started 26 years ago when Fares first worked at a Lebanese restaurant in Antwerp. But then he got the opportunity to take over a business and Fares did not hesitate for a single moment. Now he has added his own personal touch to the business and has built up his own customer base over the years. Nobody in the Antwerp diamond industry can imagine the Al-Wali snack bar without Fares behind the counter. “I have many regular customers but also some new ones from time to time”, says Fares. “Now the new generation is starting to work in the diamond industry, so the grandchildren of the older generation of diamantaires also spend their lunch break here”, says Fares.
Ideal meeting spot
The Lebanese snack bar is well known for its extensive choice of mezzes, tapas and shawarma sandwiches. The baked chicken shawarma is a best seller! According to Fares’ customers you can find the best falafel (fried balls made of chickpeas) and hummus in the entire diamond district here. “That is also the secret of our business and you see that our customers return on a daily basis”, says Fares. The very unique thing about this particular restaurant is that everyone comes here to sit down for a chat. “The Antwerp diamond sector is only three streets long and we are very centrally located. It is the ideal meeting spot to have a nice lunch but also to network throughout your lunch break.”
Antwerp, my home
Fares enjoys living in Antwerp. He likes the people, the streets and even the tourist areas like the Cathedral and De Keyserlei. “I just feel at home in Antwerp”, says Fares. “But the diamond district stole my heart.”

Wie wil lunchen in de diamantwijk kan niet om Al-Wali heen. De Libanese snackbar van Fares Saliba is al 12 jaar een vaste waarde in het Empire Shopping Center. “Onder de middag zitten hier Joden, Indiërs en Belgen gezellig te keuvelen met een heerlijke falafel in de hand. Ik maak ondertussen zo wat deel uit van het interieur van de diamantwijk”, lacht Fares Saliba. “Ik ken veel mensen, maar ik denk dat nog meer mensen mij kennen.” Iedereen die in de diamantwijk werkt, heeft dan ook wel eens een falafel of shoarma gegeten bij Fares en zijn vrouw.

De 46-jarige Libanese Fares Saliba is al 12 jaar eigenaar van de snackbar. “Het is fantatisch om te werken in de diamantwijk. Doordat de 1700 handelaren zo dicht op elkaar werken, lijkt het hier soms wel één grote familie”, aldus Fares. “En doordat nu een nieuwe generatie begint te werken in de diamantsector, komen de kleinkinderen van de oudere generatie diamantaires ook hun lunchpauze hier doorbrengen”, aldus Fares. “Grappig om zien hoe sommige kleinzonen toch veel op hun grootvader gelijken.”
Het Belgisch avontuur van Fares begon 26 jaar geleden. Eerst werkte hij in een Libanees restaurant in Antwerpen, maar dan deed zich de opportuniteit voor om een zaak over te nemen en daar heeft Fares geen minuut over getwijfeld.
Ideale ontmoetingsplaats
De Libanese snackbar staat erg gekend om zijn keuze uit mezzes, tapas en shoarmabroodjes. De gebakken kip shoarma is een bestseller! Volgens de klanten van Fares kan je hier de allerbeste falafel (gefrituurde balletjes van gestampte kikkererwten) en hummus (een puree op basis van kikkererwten) eten. “Dat is ons geheim waardoor onze klanten dagelijks terugkomen”, zegt Fares. Wat zeer eigen is aan de sector is dat iedereen ook een babbeltje slaat met elkaar. “Doordat alles zich in de diamantwijk op 1 km2 afspeelt, kent iedereen iedereen. Onze centrale ligging maakt dat we de ideale ontmoetingsplaats zijn om gezellig te lunchen maar eveneens te netwerken tijdens je middagpauze.”
Antwerpen is mijn thuis
Fares woont erg graag in Antwerpen. Hij heeft de mensen graag, de straten en zelfs de toeristische trekpleisters zoals de Kathedraal en de Keyserlei. “In Antwerpen voel ik mij thuis”, aldus Fares. “Maar aan de diamantwijk heb ik mijn hart verloren.”
